Where does this list of YC companies come from?

From Y Combinator's public company directory (ycombinator.com/companies), read through the community-maintained yc-oss mirror of the index behind it. Founders come from each company's YC page. The list refreshes every Monday. Batchwise is not affiliated with Y Combinator.

How is a company counted as AI, data or developer tools?

From YC's own tags and industry first (Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, Developer Tools, Data Engineering, Analytics and similar). Companies YC has not tagged yet are read from their one-liner and description, and new ones may be checked by a model; those show an Unverified badge until reviewed. A company can be in more than one.

What share of recent YC batches is AI?

The line above the batch river is the share of each batch tagged or described as AI. It climbed from under 10% before 2014 to about a third in 2021 and has been above 80% since 2024.

What do the batch codes mean?

W is Winter, X is Spring, S is Summer and F is Fall, followed by the year: W26 is Winter 2026. YC moved to four batches a year in 2024 and 2025.

What does Active, Acquired, Public or Inactive mean?

It is YC's own label for each company. Inactive means YC lists the company as no longer operating. The status overlay on the river shows it per batch.
